Box Score NORTH CANTON, Ohio - On a cold, frigid Friday (Feb. 28) afternoon at Vasco Field, the Walsh Cavaliers women's lacrosse team picked the right time to heat up on the field. After the Notre Dame College Falcons went on a 5-1 run in the second half, Walsh used a 3-0 run to end the game and walked away with a 10-7 win, their first victory of the season.
Walsh started the game with three straight goals over the course of 21 minutes. Lindsay Hindman opened the scoring with a goal assisted by Ellen Lawrence six minutes in. Six minutes later, Lawrence connected with Emily Atwood for a goal as Walsh led 2-0 with 12 minutes gone by. With nine minutes left in the first half, Kendra Cowen-Tripp converted a free position shot as Walsh led 3-0 over the Falcons. Notre Dame broke the shutout with a goal 90 seconds later. Atwood and Lawrence teamed up for another goal in the first half as the pair found the back of the net with 3:42 remaining. The Falcons scored the last goal of the half with 2:30 to go as Walsh led 4-2 at the halftime intermission.
Over the first 14 minutes of the second half, Melinda Maers scored two goals as Walsh's lead grew to 6-2 with 16:28 left in the game. One of Maers' goals was a free position shot and the other was assisted by Cowen-Tripp. Notre Dame College scored three goals in five minutes as they pulled within one goal. Grace Andreski slowed the momentum momentarily with a free position goal, restoring a 7-5 lead with 8:39 on the clock. The Falcons added two more goals in two minutes, tying the game at seven with 6:48 left. 39 seconds later, Cowen-Tripp put Walsh up 8-7 with her second goal of the contest. Hindman put the icing on the cake when she scored with 1:14 remaining. In the closing seconds, Cowen-Tripp earned a hat trick with a free position goal as Walsh won 10-7.
Cowen-Tripp scored the game-winner in her four point effort on three goals and one assist. Hindman was one of three players with two goals in the game, grabbing a pair of groundballs along the way. Atwood scored twice and Maers added two goals, four groundballs, two draw controls and three caused turnovers. Chloe Tatlow and Halle Kotulock both tied Maers for the team lead in groundballs as they all had four each. Andreski controlled five draws along with her one goal.
Rebecca Tomaszewski made 13 saves, including seven in the first half, for her first win in goal. She also made three groundballs while facing 25 shots (20 on goal).
Walsh returns to action after Spring Break when they host McKendree on March 10th at 4:00 PM.
