ROCHESTER, New York - The Walsh Cavaliers women's lacrosse team kicked off the 2021 season on Friday (Feb. 26) afternoon with a road contest against the #24 Roberts Wesleyan RedHawks. Walsh attempted a second-half rally from a 9-2 deficit but fell 15-10.

The short story: Walsh was outscored in the first half 9-2 as Chloe Tatlow and Kendra Cowen-Tripp scored goals for the Cavaliers on free-position shots. Coming out of halftime, Melinda Maers added two goals with Cowen-Tripp scoring the third goal on a 3-0 Cavaliers run in the first seven minutes. After three straight goals, Walsh answered on a Grace Andreski goal. Kendra Cowen-Tripp scored her third goal of the game before Hannah McFeeters tallied the final three goals of the game. The Cavaliers outscored the RedHawks 8-6 in the second half to pull within five goals. 

FOR THE CAVALIERS

• Hannah McFeeters was tied for the team lead with three goals, four groundballs and six draw controls. 
• Kendra Cowen-Tripp tied her teammate with three goals in the contest. 
• Melinda Maers finished with two goals on offense.
• Halle Kotulock had four groundballs in the game and one caused turnover.
• Grace Andreski tallied one goal, three groundballs and two draw controls.
• Kathleen Mendenhall made four saves, had three groundballs and forced two turnovers.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

• Roberts Wesleyan led in the categories of saves (10-4), groundballs (23-19), draw controls (14-13), clears (18-17).
• Walsh had the advantage in turnovers (22-18), free position shots (5-3) and shots (25-23).

• Walsh will host Charleston on Saturday (March 6) at Larry Staudt Field. The game is scheduled for 3:00 PM but is subject to change.
