Cavaliers Rally for Season Ending Win, 24-14

OWENSBORO, Kentucky - In the season finale, the Walsh Cavaliers football team pulled off a second half comeback on the road in the Bluegrass State. After trailing 14-7 at the half, Walsh scored 17 unanswered points in a 24-14 win over the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers on Saturday (April 17) afternoon at Independence Bank Field at Steele Stadium. 

With the win, Walsh finished the 2021 spring season with a 1-4 record overall and the G-MAC. 

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first score of the game came on an abbreviated scoop and score. The Cavaliers defense forced the KWC quarterback to fumble in the end zone while Tche Leroux recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. Walsh led 7-0 with 5:41 left in the first quarter. 
  • Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game with a long 48-yard touchdown pass with 3:17 left in the second quarter. Following a blocked punt in the final two minutes, Kentucky Wesleyan scored on a eight-yard touchdown run with 25 seconds left as they led 14-7 at halftime. 
  • Walsh opened the second half with a 14 play, 75 yard drive that ended in a Koby Adu-Poku touchdown run of two yards. Walsh tied the game at 14-14 with 9:02 left in the third quarter. 
  • After Sal Sidebotham recovered a KWC fumble, Adu-Poku scored two plays later from 30-yards out. Walsh took the 21-14 lead with 1:02 left in the third quarter. 
  • Mason Brown nailed a 34-yard field goal with 4:21 left to go, sealing the game for the Cavaliers with a 24-14 lead. 

FOR THE CAVALIERS

  • Walsh tallied 345 yards of total offense with 241 yards rushing and 104 yards passing.
  • Tom Vatter completed 13 of 27 passes for 104 yards passing. 
  • Adu-Poku ran for 127 yards on 23 carries and two touchdowns with two touchdowns. He also caught two passes for 13 yards.
  • Antwand Wilson compiled 60 yards rushing on 11 carries. 
  • Brandon O'Quinn (two catches), Tyre Gray (three catches), and Nolan Johnson (one catch) all had 19 yards receiving. 
  • Sal Sidebotham had nine tackles, half a sack and two fumble recoveries. 
  • The Cavaliers defense held the Panthers to 197 yards of total offense with 83 rushing yards and 114 yards passing.
