Cavaliers Fall to Malone on Senior Day

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers softball team lost both games against the Malone Pioneers on Saturday (April 24) afternoon at home. The Pioneers defeated the Cavaliers by a score of 7-1 in the first game and 2-1 in the second game.  

  • Score: Malone 7, Walsh 1 & Malone 2, Walsh 1 
  • Location: North Canton, Ohio (WU Softball Complex)
  • Records: Walsh 18-16 (4-10), Malone 21-8-1 (13-7) 

GAME ONE 

Walsh jumped out to an early 1-0 lead at the end of the 1st inning on a solo home run to right field by Ashley Zgodzinski. Malone answered back and tied the game at 1-1 in the 2nd inning. Malone added one run in the fourth, four in the fifth and one run in the sixth for a 7-1 win in the opener. 

FOR THE CAVALIERS 

  • Ashley Zgodzinski scored the only run for the Cavs with a home run 
  • Bryn Elliott tallied the only other hit for the Cavs, a single to right field.
  • Katie Herrick struck out four batters in her 4.1 innings pitched.
  • Olivia Betson pitched 1.2 scoreless innings in relief. 

FOR THE PIONEERS 

  • Kelsey Byers struck out 12 batters through seven innings.
  • Bailey Byers hit two homeruns in her four at-bats.
  • Mikayla Kesel had four hits and three RBI in the first game.

GAME TWO 

The Cavaliers and the Pioneers were in a battle for game 2. Malone scored in the 1st inning from a RBI double by Mikayla Kesel. Malone extended their lead to 2-0 in the 6th inning from a solo home run by April Howser. Walsh was able to put a run on the board in the bottom of the 7th inning from a solo home run by Riley Grimm 

FOR THE CAVALIERS 

  • Sara Gockenbach started on the mound for the Cavs. She struck out three batters and gave up two runs on four hits through 5.1 innings. 
  • Olivia Betson added another 1.2 scoreless innings of relief work following Gockenbach.
  • Riley Grimm had two hits for Walsh, including her home run. 
  • Jessie Rock had a double in the nightcap.

FOR THE PIONEERS

  • Elizabeth Dyke had two of Malone's five hits in the second game.
  • Kelsey Byers earned her second complete game of the day with one run allowed on four hits with three strikeouts. 

UP NEXT 

Walsh is back home tomorrow, Sunday April 25th for a double header against Tiffin. First pitch for the opener will be at 2:00 PM.
