Cavaliers Sweep Celtics at Home

NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The Walsh Cavaliers softball team completed a doubleheader sweep of the Carlow Celtics on Tuesday (April 6) as the Cavaliers improved to 15-11 on the season. 

Walsh started the day with a 9-1 win in five innings for game one and walked off 5-4 in eight innings in the nightcap. 

Game 1 (W, 9-1 - 5 innings)

  • Carlow opened the scoring in the first inning with a RBI single as they took an early lead. Emma Bobey blasted a three-run home run off the batting cage in right field in the bottom of the first as Walsh took a 3-1 lead. Jessie Rock added a RBI single in the bottom of the third for a 4-1 lead. A five-run fifth inning ended the first game early as Walsh won 9-1. Sarah Moats singled home a run before Riley Grimm doubled home a pair of runners. Kalin Kovach had a RBI double and came around to score on a throwing error by the shortstop, ending the contest. 
  • As a team, Walsh had nine hits in the first game. Bobey and Moats each had two hits and a pair of runs scored. Bobey accounted for two of the three extra-base hits by the Cavaliers. 
  • Gockenbach earned her tenth win of the year on her tenth complete game. She scattered one run on three hits while she fanned four Celtics batters. 

Game 2 (W, 5-4 - 8 innings)

  • For the second straight game, Carlow started with a run in the first inning. Kovach tied the game at one with a RBI single to center field in the third. Clare Mewhinney gave the Cavaliers a 2-1 lead on a bunt single in the fourth inning. Moats doubled home a run and Katelyn Loughman capped the three-run fourth inning with a RBI single. Carlow tied the game at four all with three runs in the top of the seventh. In the bottom of the eighth, McKenna Voiers laid down a safety squeeze bunt with Kovach at third base. Kovach beat the tag as Walsh won 5-4 on a walk-off fielder's choice. 
  • Loughman accounted for three of Walsh's hits in the nightcap as she went three-of-three at the plate. Overall, Walsh had 15 hits with every starter getting a hit. Moats, Macie LoParo and Mewhinney all had multi-hit games with Loughman. 
  • Emily Pratt allowed three runs (one earned) in six innings with seven hits and one walk allowed. She struck out two batters in her start. Katie Herrick gave up one unearned run in the final two innings of relief with two strikeouts.

Walsh will travel to Ohio Dominican on Saturday (April 10) at 1:00 PM in a Great Midwest doubleheader.
