Walsh Goes 2-3 in First Half of Spring Break Trip

AUBURNDALE, Florida - Through the first half of the Spring Break trip, the Walsh Cavaliers softball team has picked up two wins in five games. 

Saturday 3/5 vs. Bemidji State (W, 9-6)

  • Bemidji State opened the game with six runs in the fourth inning on four hits and two errors. In the bottom of the fourth, Katelyn Kennedy got Walsh on the board with a RBI double. Walsh continued one inning later with a five-spot to close the gap and tie the game. Katelyn Loughman singled home a pair of runs before Emma Bobey added a sacrifice fly. The next batter, Madi Russo drilled a two-run shot to right field as the game was tied after five innings. Walsh completed the comeback and took the lead in the sixth inning with three runs crossing the plate. Sarah Cantley singled home a run before Loughman plated home two runs as the score was 9-6 in favor of the Cavaliers.
  • Loughman had two hits with four RBI and two runs. Five other Cavaliers had a hit each. Bryn Elliott walked twice and scored twice. 
  • Sara Gockenbach tossed four innings with one unearned run allowed in relief on two hits, while striking out five batters. 

Saturday 3/5 vs. Saint Rose (L, 7-3)

  • The Cavaliers scored first in the second and third innings with a single run each. Kalin Kovach drew first blood with a sacrifice fly in the second inning and Sarah Moats went deep in the third inning. Saint Rose cut the lead in half in the bottom of the third but Moats responded with a RBI single in the fourth frame. Saint Rose scored five runs in the fourth and one in the fifth inning to win the game 7-3. 
  • Moats had two of Walsh's five hits with two runs batted in. Jessie Rock doubled in the game for Walsh. 

Sunday 3/6 vs. Ferris State (L, 8-7 - 8 innings)

  • Rock rocketed a two-run shot in the top of the first inning and then the Cavaliers added two more runs in the second inning. Brooklyn Hellman got a run across on a safety squeeze before Loughman added a run two batters later. Walsh led 4-0 but Ferris State erased the gap with two runs in the fifth and five runs in the sixth. Walsh battled back again to force extra innings with a trio of runs in the sixth. Hellman had another bunt play turn into a run as she reached on an error and a run scored. Like she has done all week, Loughman tied the game with a two-run single. Ferris State pushed the go-ahead run in the eighth inning for an 8-7 win. 
  • Cantley and Moats each had two hits in the game as Hellman, Rock and Loughman combined to drive in all seven runs. 
  • Hellman stole two bases as Walsh stole three bases as a team. 

Monday 3/7 vs. Millersville (L, 10-9)

  • Monday's game was a slugfest that Walsh nearly came back in. A Loughman RBI groundout started the scoring but Millersville followed with seven runs in the next three innings for a 7-1 lead. A single run scored on an error was answered with three Marauder runs and a 10-2 lead through four innings. Walsh ended the game with six straight runs and had the go-ahead run at the plate. Moats and Hannah Pfundt each had a RBI single in the two-run fifth inning. Russo added a RBI groundout in the sixth inning as the lead was cut to 10-5. After loading the bases, Emma Bobey had a RBI fielder's choice before Macie LoParo plated two runs with a double. McKenna Voiers capped the scoring with reaching on an E5. 
  • Moats had a three-hit game with two runs scored. Loughman, Rock and LoParo each managed two-hit contests as Walsh had a season-high 13 hits. 

Monday 3/7 vs. Lewis (W, 1-0)

  • Gockenbach twirled a gem in the circle on a rainy afternoon in Florida. Gockenbach kept Lewis off balance with seven shutout innings, allowing four singles and three walks. She fanned four Flyers to complete the shutout bid. 
  • Walsh won the game with a single by Moats in the seventh inning and the ball got under the left fielder's glove. 
  • Moats had two of the three hits for the Cavaliers, both singles.
