Fourth Quarter Fuels Cavs To Senior Day Win

Box Score

(NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – A five-goal fourth quarter propelled Walsh to a 9-4 win to close out the season on Senior Day at Vasco Field on a sunny Saturday afternoon. The Cavaliers (4-7, 2-5) and Fighting Scots (2-14, 1-6) were in the midst of a defensive flavored game as both teams were tied 4-4 after three quarters.

Walsh controlled most of the game and was patient with its possessions in the first half. Mason Axline (Sr., Green, OH/HS) was the first to push through the Ohio Valley defense with an unassisted goal 3:11 into the game. The Scots were quick to tie the game as Nathan Hodgins scored just 23 seconds later. Nicholas Castorf (Fr., Holbrook, NY/Sachem) put the Cavs back up on an assist from Axline with 4:29 left in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, Josh Jacobs (Sr., Columbus, OH/Hilliard Darby) celebrated his final game as a Cavalier with a score to give Walsh a 3-1 lead. The score remained there until 53 ticks left in the half when Axline tallied his third point of the day on a goal with an assist from Bryan Crim (Fr., Reading, PA/Exeter).

Ohio Valley refused to give up and gave Walsh trouble in the third quarter. The score remained 4-1 until the 6:18 mark when the Fighting Scots started their comeback with a goal. Ohio Valle added two more in the last 1:12 of the quarter to tie the game.

Just as the third quarter belonged to the Scots, the fourth quarter, and the game as a result, belonged to Walsh. Crim gave the Cavs the lead for good on power play opportunity with 11:02 left. Axline and Crim exchanged the next three goals before Castorf closed out the scoring on an assist from Alex Hudgens (Fr., South Lyon, MI/HS).

Axline finished his Cavalier career with four goals and an assist for five points. Crim scored two goals and two assists with three ground balls and a caused turnover. Castorf also had a pair of goals.

Defensively, Dylan Ciolino (Fr., Nesconset, NY/Sachem North) had one of his best games in goal as he came up with 10 saves. That included six in a do-or-die fourth quarter. Overall, he faced 29 shots on the day. In the field, Mark Guzik (Fr., Dublin, OH/Coffman) came up with seven ground balls and caused four turnovers.
