Box Score 2 (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) Walsh (9-4, 2-0) opened Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play with a sweep at home of Wayne State University (6-8, 0-2) by the scores of 6-5 (8) and 6-2 today. The teams wrap-up the four-game weekend series with a twinbill at Walsh tomorrow at 1 pm. Both games will be broadcast live on Teamline.
Helped by two Wayne State errors, Walsh scored three runs in the first inning of game one. Andrew Stalnaker (So., Canton, OH/Jackson) singled home a run, with the other two runs coming on errors. After Wayne State scored twice in the second, and once in the third inning to tie the game at 3-all, Walsh regained the lead in the bottom of the third on a Johnny Knight IV (So., Jefferson, OH/Area) two-run homer. The blast was Knight's third homer of the season.
Wayne State would tie the game at 5-all in the fifth on Ryan Mergener's two-run homer.
The Warriors third error of the game led to the winning run for the Cavs in the eighth inning. Luke Caple (So., Naples, FL/Gulf Coast) reached base on an error to start the inning. After Knight laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Caple to third, Brook Clark (Jr., Canton, OH/McKinley) reached base on an infield single which moved pinch runner Ross Etgen (So., Columbus, OH/Bishop Ready) to third base. With the infield drawn in, Jason McPeek (Jr., Stow, OH/Munroe Falls) laced a single to center to score Etgen with the winning run.
Joe Tann (Sr., Canton, OH/Central Catholic) started and went seven inning for the Cavs. Tann fanned seven. Left-hander Kyle Ward (Jr., Independence, OH/Padua Franciscan) worked the eighth to pick-up the win and improve to 2-0.
The Cavs used the same formula in game two, scoring two runs in the first and two more in the second inning to take a 4-0 lead behind senior right-hander Brandon Whitslar (Seville, OH/Cloverleaf).
Austin Szink (R-So., Canton, OH/Jackson) and Stalnaker had back-to-back doubles in the first inning. Andrew Bonnette's (Sr., Tallmadge, OH/HS) two-run single in the second put the Cavs ahead 4-0.
Wayne State tacked on single runs in the third and fifth innings to trim the Walsh lead to 4-2.
On the strength of another WSU error, Walsh added two insurance runs in the sixth inning. The big blow however was Szink's two-run double to left with two outs.
Whitslar (1-0) went the distance to pick-up his first win of the season. He scattered six hits, fanned seven and walked only one.
Bonnette, Caple and Szink each had two hits.
The Cavs have won their last five games.
