Whitslar Strikes out 10 in Coach Mead's 700th Win

Box Score

(WINTER HAVEN, Fla.) – The Walsh baseball team capped off its spring break games with a 7-3 win over Wayne State in a non-conference contest to give Head Coach Tim Mead his 700th career victory. The Cavaliers (8-8) took six of their nine games in the Sunshine State. It was also their second victory over the Warriors (3-7) this season.

Today's game began how yesterday's ended as Jason McPeek homered to left field. Walsh added a second run as Johnny Knight IV hit a two-out single to left field to bring Luke Caple.

Wayne State scored one run in the third, but the Cavs answered with three in the next half-inning. McPeek recorded another RBI as his grounder to shortstop allowed Jerad Kitzler to advance home from third. James Thomas followed with a single to right field to score Brook Clark before Caple doubled to left to bring Thomas around.

The Cavs made the score 6-1 when Clark scored again off an error by Wayne State's pitcher who threw the ball to right field in an attempt to double up McPeek on first after a pop out by Thomas. Austin Szink nailed a home run to left in the seventh for Walsh's final run.

The Warriors managed a couple of runs in the eighth, but couldn't get any closer.

Walsh received an outstanding effort from Brandon Whitslar who picked up his first win of the season. He punched out a career-high 10 batters and allowed just one run on four hits in six innings of work.

Caple finished the game 3-for-4 with a double. Clark, who also had a double, McPeek, and Andrew Stalnaker also had multiple hit games.

Walsh returns to competition in the Midwest Regional Crossover Baseball Showcase in Westfield, Ind., this Friday. The Cavaliers will open the weekend event with Drury at 5:30 p.m.
