Box Score (NORTH CANTON, Ohio) – It was a great finish to the season as Walsh defeated Ohio Valley 14-4 in ECAC action at Vasco Field on Saturday afternoon. The win also set a new program mark for wins in a season for the young Cavaliers (5-10, 2-6) program.
The Fighting Scots (2-9, 0-8) were the first ones to strike in the game and tied the game up at 2-2 before Walsh's offense started to click and hit on all cylanders.
Ryan Martin's score on an assist from Nicholas Castorf with 52 seconds left in the opening quarter set off a firestorm of goals to close the opening stanza. The two connected again 17 seconds later, this time with Castorf finding the back of the net, for a 4-2 lead. Castorf wasn't done as he scored yet again on an assist from Collin Trankel with two seconds left in the first.
Castorf and Trankel combined for two more goals in the same fashion to start off the second quarter before Bryan Crim scored unassisted to put the score at 8-2. After OVU's Steve Zolezzi scored when the Scots were down a man, Heisler found the back of the net on the power play on an assist from Castorf to make the score 9-3.
Walsh carried that advantage into the second half and held it until the 2:16 mark of the third quarter when Benjamin Suchomma scored on a pass from Trankel.
Heisler added two more goals in the fourth to go with scores by Alex Hudgens and Zach Macaluso.
Castorf finished an impressive game with four goals and four assists for eight points while Trankel added a goal and five assists for six. Heisler tallied three goals and Crim added a pair of goals with an assist to also record three points.
Defensively Dylan Ciolino picked up the win in a goalie-by-committee game in which all three of Walsh's netminders found time between the pipes. Ciolino made eight saves on the day on 12 shots-on-goal faced. Eli Ecklerle also made a save. Elsewhere on defense, John Arnold led the team with three caused turnovers. Walsh caused 15 in total.
Overall, Walsh held a 38-26 advantage on ground balls with Hudgens recording the most with seven. Rafac and Crim each added five. Crim was also strong on face-offs with a .667 winning percentage as he won 10-of-15.
