Box Score (XENIA, Ohio) – Walsh ensured it will play on the final day of the GLIAC Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Wayne State at Grady's Field Saturday evening. It was a complete team effort as the No. 5 Cavaliers (28-24) received excellent defense at all positions to go with timely hitting to preserve the win.
It's also the third time that the Cavs have defeated the No. 4 Warriors (28-23) this season. All three games have been neutral site contests.
Starter Matt Iosue was stellar on the mound as he tossed seven scoreless innings to improve to 5-4 on the season. The southpaw struck out seven and gave up just six hits with two walks. Tyson Lautanen took the hill once again and added a scoreless ninth as the All-GLIAC Honorable Mention fanned three of the four batters he faced.
The pitching staff received some help in the infield as the Cavaliers turned a pair of double plays. The first came on the 643 variety in the fifth, while the second saw second baseman Brook Clark and first baseman Andrew Stalnaker make the turn in the eighth. It was the duo's GLIAC-best 30th twin killing of the season and proved pivotal as the Warriors hit a solo home run later in the frame.
At the plate, the Cavs received another big day from Jason McPeek who was a single shy of the cycle. The All-GLIAC First Team selection started off the game with his GLIAC-leading 16th home run of the season. In the seventh inning, he doubled to left center to bring in Clark that gave the Maroon and Gold a 3-0 lead. McPeek has now hit safely in his last 19 games.
Walsh's second run came in the second inning after James Thomas hit an infield single to third that brought in Austin Szink.
The win leaves the Cavaliers as the lone unbeaten team left in the GLIAC Tournament. Walsh will return to action in tomorrow's third and final game against the winner of the first elimination game of the day between No. 1 Grand Valley State and No. 4 Wayne State.
